Q: Do I have to open ports on my firewall to get the Web Access feature to work?
A: If your Broadband router supports UPnP then you don’t need to change any of the router’s settings. Most recent routers support UPnP. If you have an older router you can manually configure your firewall settings (please refer to the setup
PDF.)
Q: Do I need to install software on my PC or laptop to enable the Web Access feature?
A: Buffalo Technology's Web Access feature does not require any software to be installed on any PC or laptop. Any common Web browser can be used for access.
Q: Who can I share my files with?
A: You can share your files with anyone you choose. You can make a share “Anonymous” which will give anyone access to your files that knows your LinkStation/ TeraStation name, or you can password protect your share to limit access to those who you share the password with. However, please read the disclaimer below and make sure you adhere to your local/regional laws or restrictions that your ISP or Broadband provider may have set for your Internet usage. Q: Does the Web Access MP3 streaming feature allow streaming of DRM protected MP3s?
A: No, the streaming feature only works for unprotected multimedia files. NAS owners are responsible for following their respective laws and ISP rules regarding content distribution.
Q: Can I password protect shares that are Web Access enabled?
A:Yes, you can password protect any Web Access share you like.
Q: Where do I set the password protection for the Web Access feature?
A: You set the password protection in the “Shared Folders” section of the main menu in your LinkStation's or TeraStation's administrative Web interface.
Q: What files can I share with the Web Access feature?
A: You can share any of your files through Web Access. Certain file types offer additional features. MP3 files for example can be streamed directly through the Web interface using the embedded Flash player.
Q: Does Buffalo Technology keep a copy of my files?
A: Buffalo Technology is merely responsible for establishing a peer-to-peer connection between your LinkStation or TeraStation and those accessing your files. The actual data transfers (downloads from your LinkStation or TeraStation) pass over the Internet and at no point through Buffalo Technology's network.
Q: Does Buffalo Technology keep a copy of my Web Access key?
A: Buffalo Technology does not keep a copy of your Web Access key. In case you lose your key you have to setup your Web Access feature again. Your key is unique in identifying your LinkStation or TeraStation to Buffalo’s authentication server. However, even if you lose your key your data remains accessible on your LinkStation or TeraStation at all times. Please don't give your key to others. All you need to do is share the URL of your LinkStation or TeraStation (i.e.
www.buffalonas.com/baldeagle
) or the name "baldeagle" (for those that already know how to get to the
www.buffalonas.com login page).
Q: Can Buffalo Technology look at the files on my LinkStation or TeraStation?
As long as you do not explicitly share your Web Access and passwords with Buffalo Technology employees, they will have no way of accessing your files.
Q: What is UPnP?
UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) is designed to make home networking simpler. UPnP offers automated network connectivity of PCs, laptops and other networking devices. UPnP leverages the TCP/IP protocol to enable configuration and control of networked devices. UPnP is a universal technology that is supported on most operating systems, including embedded devices and works with almost any type of networking media - wired or wireless.
Q: What if my router does not support UPnP?
A: If your router does not support UPnP you have to manually forward the appropriate port. The local port to forward to (on the LinkStation or TeraStation) is port 9000. For further information on port forwarding, please go to

Q: Can I upload content remotely to my LinkStation or TeraStation via Web Access?
A: An upload feature is planned for a future release version of Web Access.
Q: Can others delete files from my LinkStation or TeraStation through Web Access?
A: Remote viewers do not have the capability to remove files from your LinkStation or TeraStation
